Halliday Wine Companion 2019
This week was the annual release of industry doyen James Halliday guide on Australian wines. Once again Ben Haines Wine was awarded 5 Red Star.
2014 Raphaella Syrah – 95 points
“Sourced from Yeingberg vineyard, where the vines were planted in ’99. Two wild ferments (one whole berries, the other whole bunches), matured for 20 months in Frenchbarriques. Good colour, this is a wine of intensity that treads lightly, the acidity and freshness underpinning the fruit important to sophisticated winemaking.”
2016 Volta Brackets Marsanne – 95 points (future release – see 2015 vintage current release)
“If properly grown (and vinified) on the right site (Tahbilk and Yeringberg notable examples), marsanne can flower brilliantly once 5yo, improving further thereafter. This is Ben Haines’ fifth vintage from Warramunda vineyard (not far from Yeringberg) and he is fine-tuning his approach. Only time required.”
