2014 | Warramunda ‘Reprise’ Marsanne
Marsanne is never in a hurry. Aside from its tardy ripening tendencies, the 2015 ferment was slow and steady. Winemaking was very stripped back – all about texture, character and freshness.
Ten months on lees and one year in bottle prior to release paid respect to a wine that does things in its own time.
I love the layering of aroma and flavour in this wine. A tart, pithy core of citrus and apple is wrapped in a creamy centre, with lemon thyme and frangipani anchored by dollops of honeycomb.
Dustings of spice and hints of brioche and biscotti bring a nutty, savoury twist. Textured, mineral and moreish, this is the vineyard in a glass from another stunning Yarra Valley vintage.
“From the Warramunda Vineyard in Coldstream planted ’01, hand-picked, whole bunch-pressed, a cool wild yeast fermentation in puncheons for 6 months, partial mlf, matured on lees for 9 months, no stirring. Goes a long way to make a silk purse (in terms of present drinking) out of a sow’s ear. It has exceptional mouthfeel and flavour, more citrus than honeysuckle or pear, the oak more evident as texture than flavour.”
– Halliday Wine Companion 2018
The Warramunda Vineyard in Coldstream backs up towards Gruyere with 360-degree views of the valley, the mountains and beyond. The Marsanne block sits at the peak of the hill – the front yard of a grand contemporary house.
The soils of the Warramunda Vineyard are duplex, mountain-derived clays, with sandstone and mudstone making up the subsoil horizon covered over with loam. The Yarra Valley battles a marginal climate, but great years are truly exceptional.
A beautifully mild and sunny ripening season saw complex flavour development and excellent retention of grape acids. 2015 was an effortless vintage, delivering age-worthy Marsanne with impeccable balance.
