Our Review
In ’20, WA-based business Overstory bought the Goaty Hill winery and vineyard in the Tamar Valley. They renamed it Small Wonder and appointed Wayne Nunn as viticulturist, with Dylan Grigg as consultant, to manage the 25ha site. Wayne and Dylan have since converted the vineyard, planted in ’98 to pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonnay, riesling and sauvignon blanc, to organic (certification was achieved in ’22, the same year the first Small Wonder wines were released), and together with group winemaker Andrew Trio, have worked to identify the site’s micro-terroirs via solar radiation mapping in order to finetune viticultural management, with an eye to better fruit and ultimately better wine. In ’24, a new state-of-the-art, energy-efficient winery was completed, Ockie Myburgh joined as winemaker and Overstory acquired a second Tasmanian vineyard, this time in the Coal River Valley, which will double and diversify Small Wonder’s production. -JAMES HALLIDAY
